1st Grade Project Based learning Lesson at Martin City Elementary

Ms. Sara Jaramillo, a First grade teacher at Martin City read the book “To be a Kid” to her class.  In the book, there is a picture of a child with no shoes.  Ms.  Jaramillo’s students had many questions about the child with no shoes.  This conversation led to the class deciding to do a clothes drive for one week and give the donated clothes to the Highgrove Early Childhood Center so that they can be distributed to families in throughout the Grandview Community.

The students started by writing opinion papers deciding if they should do a clothes drive. The majority of students had the opinion that the clothes drive was a good idea.  Students made posters and displayed them throughout the building.  They designed flyers that went home with all of the students at Martin City and they wrote announcements for the intercom.  They also made commercials using I pads to promote their clothes drive.  They placed boxes for collection throughout the building and checked them each day.

In one week, the class collected 36 bags of clothing that will be given to the Highgrove Early Childhood Center.  Ms. Jaramillo’s students  feel like they have accomplished something big and they are very excited to give the clothes they collected to the Early Childhood Center.

GHS Graduates Join College Cycling Program

Two new student-athletes, Connor Brown and Dylan Mason,  will join the Lions cycling program in the Spring of 2015.

Brown grew up in Grandview, Mo., and graduated from Grandview Senior High School.  He began cycling at the age of four and was only nine when he competed in his first race, but he took a six-year break to pursue other sporting activities until he was reintroduced to cycling when he was 15.  Since that time, he's gained a wealth of experience, racing for the USA Junior Nation Team in Europe, competing in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg, and Switzerland.

Mason was only introduced to competitive cycling earlier this year in March, but the Quincy, Ill., native from Quincy Senior High School has already generated some strong results, earning the Illinois State Junior Criterium Championship.

Brown plans to study pre-law and business economics while Mason plans to pursue pre-med with aspirations of becoming a dentist in the future.
