National Rock Band Holds Concert to Teach Teens Financial Literacy

You’ve probably heard the tunes of Gooding and may not even know it.  His music has been showcased in hundreds of commercials and hit shows like “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,”  “CSI,” “The Good Wife,”  “Daily Show” and “Criminal Minds.”  On Thursday, September 25th Gooding will play his hit tunes for hundreds of teens at Grandview High School during two assemblies.

This isn’t just a concert; it’s a chance for band leader, who goes by the name ‘Gooding,’ to use his platform as an artist to talk to teens about financial literacy. The educational tour uses the power of a live rock performance and Gooding’s own personal story to inspire young people with lessons of finance, saving early, credit card debt and predatory lending.

“Gooding's assembly contains excellent music, commercial production, and most importantly an engaging message for young people on making wise lifelong decisions around money, investing, saving, and avoiding debt. It is a powerful message for people of all ages,” said Dr. Ralph Teran, Superintendent.

According to Gooding, students who do not receive this message early often drop out of college and return to the same cycle of financial irresponsibility as their parents. Children from lower income households and un-banked families are especially at risk. The district appreciates the support of Bank Midwest who is helping to sponsor the event.

Hope was awarded a scholarship last spring to attend art classes at the Nelson.  Her art is also hanging in the Board of Education room along with other students’ work from the district.  The Grandview School District is proud of Hope’s latest achievements.  If you’re interested in seeing Hope’s work you have until November to go check it out.

2014 Grandview Triangle Family Fun Walk/Run and Health Fair

The 13th annual Grandview Triangle Family Fun Walk and Run got off to a fast start this weekend.  Dozens showed up to Grandview High School bright and early Saturday morning to pound the pavement.  The event started out with warm up tunes provided by the Grandview’s Blue and Gold Brigade marching band.  The walk/run was all about fun and staying active and healthy.  Information on those topics was provided during the health fair at the event. That’s where a hand full of local vendors were on hand for participants.  The run/walk is put on every year by the Grandview Education Foundation.  All funds raised benefit the Grandview Education Foundation’s programs, scholarships and teacher grants for Grandview C-4 students.

Harvest Time is here for GHS Ecology Classes

Check out what’s been growing out of the gardens at Grandview High School.  Students reaped a harvest of vegetables already this fall. The Grandview High School Ecology class has been participating in a project with Kansas City Community Gardens for the last two years. Students have six raised bed gardens and have produced over 500 pounds of produce the last two years (334 pounds and counting this season).

“The goal is to teach students about the importance of healthy eating and growing their own food,” said Heath Cooper, GHS Science Teacher.

Last year students were given the Marder Award for the school yard garden that demonstrates “spirit of community gardening”

Grandview High School Homecoming 2014

Grandview vs. Belton Game
Homecoming started off on a high note with the parade and all the festivities leading up to the big game and high school dance.  But, the Bulldog varsity football team fell short of a win to the Belton Pirates.  The score was 24-21.  It was a great comeback in the latter part of the game but a tough loss.  We are still proud of our Bulldogs football players for their great effort Friday night!

Homecoming Queen and King
Congratulations to Grandview High School’s 2014 Homecoming Queen and King.   Seniors Hope Lee and Devon Wright were named this year’s queen and king.  Both were crowned at halftime during  Friday night’s game.  Hope was nominated by the GHS Softball team.  She is a member of National Honor Society, the Cappies, and the Spirit Squad. Hope is also the captain of the softball team, the historian of the Thespian Society and lead editor for the yearbook.  Wright was nominated by the GHS Football team.  He is a member of the wrestling team and the yearbook staff.  He is also the varsity football team captain.  He plans to play college football and then become a Police Officer.

Celebrating 100 Years
As part of the homecoming festivities a reception was held in the GHS library celebrating Grandview C-4’s 100th year.  Some past and present faculty and staff were recognized for the service they provided our schools and community throughout the years.  A pregame recognition also took place on the 50-yard line thanking those in attendance for their support of our district.

Homecoming Parade and Pep Rally
The sun didn’t come out at this year’s parade but that didn’t stop the bright blue and gold spirit from shining through.  Grandview High School’s annual homecoming parade was a big celebration in downtown Grandview.   Cheerleaders, the Blue and Gold Brigade band, and Bulldog athletes could be heard rooting on their school with pride down Main Street and into the high school gymnasium where a pep rally in the high school’s gymnasium followed.

Grandview Celebrates Homecoming

The parade will kick off at around 1pm Friday. It starts at Grandview Road and will end at the Grandview High School.  The parade route will go down Main Street and end at the GHS stadium.  The fun won’t end there.  Students will follow that with a pep assembly at the stadium.  All of that will have them ready the cheer on the Bulldogs for the football game against the Belton Pirates at 7pm.  At halftime the Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned. Friday’s finale will be a Hollywood Premiere themed dance for the students.
